Born out of the energy crises in the mid 70s, ECS Lighting Controls Ltd grew to become the largest dedicated lighting controls supplier in the United Kingdom. The company offered a wide range of lighting management solutions backed by the most skilled and experienced people in the industry.

ECS was established in 1977 to design, manufacture and market cost-effective lighting controls in response to the demand for energy saving in lighting. The company pioneered much of today’s market place, initially appealing to the energy conscious. The focus, then and now, was to provide products and systems that could be economically justified, yet were user friendly. This philosophy, of appropriate innovation, has led to ECS supplying systems into over 5000 buildings over the two decades of its existence.

Whitecroft plc acquired ECS in December 1985, the company became a constituent of the group’s Lighting Division alongside Whitecroft Lighting Limited, Whitecroft Road and Tunnel Lighting, Simplex Chalmit, Industria and Universal Transformers. Although all group companies maintained a distinct and independent position in the market, collaboration between them also produced integrated lighting and controls packages for many major projects. In October 1999, ECS was acquired by Philips.
